CHEAP AND EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING FOR YOUR BUSINESS
If There's No Way to do Without Advertising, Why Not Cash in on Free Publicity by Using Your Own Writing Skills? Here's How. By Jeanie Swisher
Advertising costs are a permanent drain on all business. There's just no way around it. However, many people tout the advantages of FREE advertising. And it can work for you. You can get some FREE advertising for your business by simply doing some writing. Newspapers and magazines are full of articles and press releases. Why not write something of your own?
IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE
A well-written article can give you a great deal of exposure. Choose a topic in your field of expertise. I always start with a good beefy title. Write down everything you know about the topic on a piece of paper. Then put the information under sub-headings and consider the following:
1. Typesetting--This is where the skill comes in. There are proper margins, fonts and spelling checks that are a "must" if you are to get published.2. Ideas--As you type, you'll no doubt think of more information. You may even omit something that seemed important in the first draft. A good night's sleep also clears one's mind to do the final draft.
3. Proof Reading--Always have your material proof read. Nothing will turn an editor off quicker than misspelled words or improper grammar. This is where many writers drop the ball.
4. Printing--Always use good paper for printing your work. "Presentation" is everything. After all, you're asking an editor to give you FREE exposure for your business. Give yourself the best chance to get published.
EVERYONE WINS
It's a two-way street between writers and publishers. A magazine or newspaper has to have interesting material for their readers or they can't sell subscriptions. So you're helping the publisher. In turn, the publisher is offering you space in his publication to advertise your products or services. For the small cost of some of your time and a few dollars for printing and postage, you can have "almost" FREE advertising for your business.
IS IT TRUE?
It's said, "Never write anything without getting paid for it." Now maybe that holds true for those who write for the Times, Forbes, USA Today, etc. But, when an editor recently published a full-page write up about my business success, I counted it at the magazine's advertising rate. In this case, the magazine would have charged $500 for a full-page layout. Did I get paid for my article?
ALL IT TAKES
Good writers don't happen overnight. They learn their skills over time. Working with a good editor, most people can learn to be proficient writers. Why not give it a try? All you have to lose is some FREE advertising.
