Even Successful Business People Have Difficulty Writing. Here Are a Few Tips to Help You Improve Your Skills.
By Jeanie Swisher
Getting an article published is the cheapest form of advertising for your business. There are thousands of publications looking for good material. With a little help and some basic writing skills, you'll be able to increase your business and make more money.
But just because someone has an education doesn't mean they can write. Even some people with a Ph.D. may not be able to write a good sales letter or an article for publication.
Writing is a skill. And beyond that, you must understand what an editor wants for his publication. If you expect to get published, you have to follow the rules. "Space is Money" to a magazine or newsletter. "Time is Money" also. An editor will not rewrite your articles or reformat your stories. Spelling and grammar errors should be a thing of the past with spell check on today's computers.
For our Up-to-Speed Business News, I receive many articles from hopeful writers. Most writers are respectful for what I have to offer. But I'm appalled when I receive an article that is strung out with unnecessary spaces, subtitles, and sub-subtitles that would waste valuable printing space.
One of our biggest complaints about the articles we receive is the setup of the article. Fancy fonts and wild paragraphs will never make it into many publications. Many small publications simply cut and paste the article so there must be a uniformity of setup to even be considered.
If you can't write, ask for help. You can take some writing classes and work with someone who will teach you proper writing and formatting skills. I hate it every time I have to reject a good story line because of poor writing. How do I tell a writer, "Since you don't write well, hire a professional editor to help you get published."
But that's just what they need to do.
