THE VALUE OF A GREAT PERSONALITY

Does Being a Likable Person Really Count in Business? You Bet it Does. Here's How it Works.

By Jeanie Swisher

A successful person will light up the room. Burke Veley, former CEO of IBM, does just that. The smile on his face and his outstretched hand will allow no doubt about his success. It takes more than a high IQ and a pile of money to be a success in business. Being a likable person goes a long way in working with employees, suppliers, partners and clients.

Not everyone is born with a great personality. We all know people who are just plain "not nice." But by recognizing the need for improvement, you can begin to take steps that will help you to become more successful in working with other people.

The Dale Carnegie Institute offers a 12-week course in human relations. You have probably heard about the longtime best-selling book by Carnegie, "How to Win Friends and Influence People." The key in the Carnegie Institute human relations and sales course is to be honestly open about yourself and to be sincerely open when listening to the needs of others.

A great personality goes hand-in-hand with self-confidence. You can't have one without the other. Self-confidence is the vision that we hold of ourselves. As you honestly open yourself to the needs of those around you, your self-confidence will expand to new levels of success.

There are hundreds of books, tapes and videos to help you to have a better personality and more self-confidence. To name a few, you'll find materials by Carnegie, Tony Robbins, Denis Waitley and Zig Ziglar. If you want help there's plenty of it around. Look in your local bookstore, library and also into adult night school programs in your area.

Never discount the value of a great personality with regard to being a business success. Many successful business people have gotten to the top by stepping on other people along the way. But to get more done with less stress in your business, treating those around you nicely will get you where you want to go more quickly.

If you help other people get what they want in turn they will be willing to help you get what you want. Everyone will win with you at the helm.
