STARTING A BUSINESS

With Any Business Startup, the Old Wisdom Still Applies--Find a Need and Fill It.

By Jeanie Swisher

Where does a new business begin? Does it take a high IQ or a whole lot of money? Do you have what it takes to start your own business?

I've been taking photographs since I was ten years old. I've taken pictures of family outings, vacations, holidays, and through the years as my daughters have grown up. And I've had my share of cut-off heads and overexposed pictures. But three years ago, this hobby took a new turn.

While working on the class reunion committee for my high school reunion, I took some photographs of the wonderful old school that was built in 1932. And "Bingo"--a new business was born. It was that simple.

Today, at my leisure, I take photographs of schools. With my computer and laser printer, I make gifts for class reunions. Using these school photographs, I make note cards, magnets, bookmarks, postcards, and invitations that are treasured by the recipients at high school and university reunions. In the first year, "School Classics" put $1200 into my pocket. (Samples available upon request. Send a picture for a quote).

Taking pictures is fun for me and I enjoy getting the "right angle." Being a part of many class reunions has given me many new friends. And everyone who attends a reunion brings a guest who is part of another school reunion that brings in more customer leads for the future. In my scruffy slippers at my home computer, I create a product that is profitable for my customer and me.

If you want to start a business, the first step is to keep your eyes open for something that you could do and get paid for doing. A friend of mine was cleaning up the kitchen at a neighbor's party when she thought to herself, "I like going to parties and I bet that people would be willing to pay me to clean up when they have a big party." Last year her little part-time business earned $2800. Not bad for extra pocket money!

As teenagers, most of us mowed grass, baby sat, or washed cars. These were just little things that we did to earn money. Today starting a home business is just as easy as it was at sixteen. All it takes is an idea, genuine interest, and some drive to succeed. And it can be done with very little money. For a few dollars, you can buy a dozen business cards and you're in business. It's as simple as keeping your eyes open for something that other people need and would pay to get. Find a need and fill it.
