Does Lack of Funding Have to Mean the Death of Your Business Dream? Not Necessarily. By Muyi Shogbuyi You can get money to start, expand your business, or get out of debt. Whatever you need money for, chances are you can get it. Why let your dream go atrophy because of lack of money? If there's something you love to do, something you make or some great idea you come up with, chances are you could get funding to finance your project.
For example, an organization called National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) offers grant funding for education and access. Meaning if you can write, draw or paint to expand children's opportunity for educational art experiences, you may be able to get a grant up to $200,000 to further your talent in this area. The NEA gives grants to artists, film makers, writers and other creative businesses.
The beauty of the matter is, grant funding is money given to you that you don't have to pay back. You use the money to do something that helps lots of people to improve their lives.
What's the easiest type of grant you can get? Besides the one mentioned above for artists, you can also get grants to:
* Train people for new jobs after they've been downsized, laid off, released from prison or on public welfare.* Put people back into the work force so they can earn enough to support their families.
* Reduce the welfare burden of people and give them a positive image to create a better life for their family.
In order to get such a grant, take the following steps:
1. Decide what kind of service you want to render based on your ability and interest.2. Determine who needs the service in your area and how many. In the case of unemployed people in your area, this information could be obtained from your State unemployment agency.
3. Prepare a written plan on how you would train the people for new careers.
4. Estimate how much you will need for salaries (yours, teachers, and other personnel). Figure out the amount of rent, equipment and other expenses. Add 20 percent to the total amount you think you'll need for safety purposes.
5. Have your plan professionally prepared and typed.
To offer job training services, contact:
* Local large corporations, especially those that down-sized and may feel obligated to give something back to the community.* Local city, state or town governments that want to increase the number of job-holders in their area by retraining the unemployed.
* The Federal government, which may be making either straight grants or matching grants to an area in an effort to overcome high unemployment and jobless rates.
To increase your odds of getting a grant and to have your business plan well prepared, contact a great organization called the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). You can get the help you need, and meet face-to-face with an expert who has experience in your area of need. SCORE has more than 12,000 volunteer business counselors in the country.
The time is right for you to follow your dream and create a life you want. You can have freedom from money worries, debt collectors, and a chance to determine your destiny. True, it doesn't happen overnight. But you'd never get there if you don't get started. Now is the time.
