A SIMPLE WAY TO EARN MORE MONEY,

WHILE WORKING LESS!

Entrepreneurs Sometimes Wind Up as Distributors for Another Company.
Here's How to Make it Work.
c2003 by Ron Ruiz

Although it's almost always better to own and control your own product, sometimes you may find yourself acting as a rep or distributor for another company. One positive aspect about being a distributor is the company support that's usually provided. On the downside, unless the company also has protected territories, you face competition from other reps selling the same product. Network marketing companies usually fall into this category.

About 10 years ago, I was in that same position and found ways to overcome the obstacles and make good money for very little work.

I was a rep for a company that offered biweekly mortgage loans. We could sell the program to homeowners ourselves or "wholesale" it to financial companies. If we introduced the program to people in the financial industry and they sold it to their clients, we would receive a commission on each of their sales.

Some reps sold the program one-on-one or took out expensive ads to reach the financial companies. If someone called the company as a result of your advertising, you would get credit for finding them and each time they made a sale, you earned a commission. That sounded like the plan for me...however I wasn't going to take out expensive ads.

HERE'S WHAT I DID

I was studying how to get free publicity at the time and was ready to give it a test. Here's what I did:

• I went to our local library and found information on 20 trade publications that were read by people in the financial industry.

• I created a press release. I listed the company's toll-free number with my representative number as the extension for tracking.

• I mailed them out and forgot about them.

Total time invested? Two to four hours. Total money invested? About $25.

A few months later I started receiving commission checks in the mail. I did a little investigating and found that several of the trade publications gave me a write up based on my press release. Financial professionals were reading the articles, calling in, signing up, and selling the program!

I ended up receiving commission checks month after month for several years. All for a couple hours work and a $25 investment. Almost anyone can use this model and achieve similar results.

A FEW KEY POINTS

1. If you want national exposure, don't reveal you are "just" a representative of the company. Make it appear that they are dealing with the home office.

2. Make your news release sound newsy--don't try to "sell." Look at announcements in trade publications to see how they read. If you're involved in a multi-level or network marketing company--never, never never say anything in the release that would even remotely make it sound like network marketing.

3. If your company won't provide a phone number for prospects to call (and keep track of who got them to call), be sure to list your own phone number.

Remember you don't have to be a pro. This was my first attempt at writing a press release and it worked well. It can work for you, too.
