NAME YOUR COMPANY AND MAKE IT NEWSWORTHY

Names Are Important to the Success of a Business. Pick a Good One and Then Be Sure the Right People Find Out About it.
By Kevin Nunley
Few things are more important than the name you give your company. A name that gives the wrong impression or is hard to remember can cause problems for years to come.

Here are five ways to name your business. They're sure to give you a head start toward getting a solid name that works for you.

1. Use the Owner--Name your business after the owner's name. My official business name is Kevin Nunley Associates.

2. Combine Ideas--Use the owner's name, along with what your company does. For example--Ralph Mason Construction.

3. Indicate Benefit--Come up with a name that indicates your main benefit. A house cleaning service might be Affordable House Cleaning.

4. Share What You Do--Use a name that simply tells what you do. For example--Event Promotion.

5. Fictious Name--Finally, you can use a fictitious name. This is particularly popular in some cities and industries. DollarRama, for example.

Yahoo and Amazon.com were names most of us had heard, but nobody had ever connected them with what these companies do. So fictitious names can work, especially if they're followed with the right promotion. Making your business newsworthy is the key to effective promotion.

If you spend a little time sending press releases to media editors, you will soon hear one say, "We can't use your story unless it's newsworthy."

But what makes something newsworthy? Like many things in life, newsworthiness is largely in the eye of the beholder. What one editor thinks isn't worth her time can be a hot story to the next news person you talk to. In most cases, information is newsworthy if it's something a particular media audience will be interested in.

Your local TV news probably isn't interested in doing a story on how you sign up members in your networking program. But a networking magazine might be delighted to profile your methods so they can be used by others in the same field.

In addition, the media finds other things newsworthy:

* Anything that relates to a topic already in the news

* Your connection with celebrities

* Events--TV particularly loves visual happenings

* Information helpful to the audience or readership

Connect your business to any of the above and you'll be on your way with a strong name and a newsworthy story. That's a winning combination.
