How Can You Get Better Results From Your Own Web Site? The Answers May Surprise You.
By Kevin Nunley
This week, I tried to visit as many Internet sites as possible. I quickly compared sites that looked exciting and up-to-date to those that seemed less appealing. Incidentally, the sites that looked better tended to be ones that were getting better results.
To my surprise, however, the common element between all the energized sites was the creative use of small ad banners. These days, a great many affiliate programs and banner advertisers provide small banners or buttons. Most are brightly-colored and often animated. Site graphics and copy can be straightforward, while banners add visual spice to a site.
Be careful to exclude big, slow-loading banners that will frustrate visitors who have slow phone lines or modems. Use a graphics-optimization program to reduce the loading time of banners. There are several low-cost programs at tucows.com.
And while you're redesigning your site, consider a new way to tackle your email. In one survey, researchers found that half of all big web sites took four to five days to answer email. And in many cases, smaller sites aren't doing much better.
For example, I was interested in purchasing a $400 piece of software. I emailed three sites with two brief questions, making it very clear I was ready to buy NOW. I didn't hear back from any of them. It isn't that business owners are lazy. Tackling a stack of email isn't much fun for most people. Most of us don't particularly enjoy writing.
So what do you do?
You can keep up with lots of email quickly and easily by using pre-written answers.
Every business answers the same questions over and over. When you type an answer, save it in a file on your computer's desktop. The next time someone asks the question, copy and paste the answer into your reply. This simple strategy cuts the time needed for email by a factor of ten. One smart company has a secretary competently answer the day's email in about 20 minutes.
Of course, these techniques are highly subjective. Make sure these strategies work for both you and your customers.
