PHONE TRICKS FOR HOME WORKERS

Are You Feeling Overloaded with Phone Calls? Here Are a Few Tips to Ease the Burden.

By Kevin Nunley

Answering the phone can be a challenge for many people who work alone from home.

Long-winded customers can keep you from getting important tasks done. It can also be hard to answer the phone when the dogs are barking at the mailman or your toddler is turning over the fish tank.

Here are a few tips for handling home-business phone calls like a pro.

1. Avoid Voice Mail--Many people hate leaving a recording and will simply hang up. If your budget can afford it, get an answering service. Mine answers the phone with the words, "Nunley Associates," takes a message, and emails it to me.

2. Hire Help--A friend hires a secretary to come into her home several hours each day. Customers know which hours they can call to get a live human.

3. Forward Calls--If you still wish to answer all your calls yourself, you can do it no matter where you are. It's easy to forward your home phone to your cell phone. Be sure to tell customers they are getting a direct line.

Remember that at busy times, it might be better to focus on the work at hand. You can always return calls when things settle down.

Good luck with your home business.
