INTERNET AND EMAIL TRICKS To Succeed on the Internet, You Must Bring the Business to Your Site and Then Respond to it. The Following Tricks Show You How.
By Kevin Nunley
Get listed on a major search engine and you could suddenly find 2,000 visitors per day dropping by your web site. That's free promotion that would otherwise cost you plenty. Recently it has been difficult to get on and stay listed with search engines. One of the most important engines accidentally erased much of their database (including your URL). Several more were taking new submissions but weren't registering them.
Search engine expert Jerry West says you only need to worry about three: Yahoo, Alta Vista and Excite. Together they account for 88 percent of search engine use.
To get listed with Yahoo, submit your web address at Canada.com Both use the same database and Canada.com can have you listed in three days or less. You should also submit at dmoz.org. That's the page for the Open Directory Project which supplies the database for Lycos and Hotbot.
And when the responses begin coming in, it's important to have an email plan. Email is quickly changing the way we do business. In fact, many customers now prefer it because of email's speed and convenience.
The downside is you can get swamped with too many messages. One business owner complained, "I get over 300 emails a day and all of them want an answer."
Of course, you could ignore email, but your business will suffer. Many customers will simply find another place to buy if you wait more than a day to answer their message. Keep a file of answers to questions customers often ask. Save them to your desktop or use an email program that lets you use message templates.
Customize each message with the customer's name and a line or two that refers to them, their concern, or their business. Don't spend too much time on any one message.
Push yourself to come up with a reply, even when you feel like leaving the message for later. Unanswered email can pile up and quickly become forgotten. Don't let that happen to your business.
