PART ONE
There are countless people who have sat in my company's waiting room, haphazardly searching for a job when what they really needed was to concentrate on developing a success-oriented frame of mind. It's one thing to plan a career and get a job and another matter to achieve success. Consider these steps for reaching increased growth potential.
1. Improve Your Self-Image--Your feelings, actions, performance, behavior and abilities are in line with your opinion of yourself. Picture yourself as successful. Act as if you're successful and you will be successful. It will seem difficult at first, but persevere and you'll attain results. Attitude creates success. The child who is constantly told by parents and teachers that he is no good often turns out to be no good. The child who lives with praise and understanding more often grows up to become an emotionally stable person.
I was recently in St. Louis and asked a lady, "How are you today?"
"I choose to be very well, thank you," she replied. She knew that you are the type of person you think you are.
2. Take the Word "Impossible" Out of Your Thinking--On Sunday, December 16, 1979, there was less than four minutes remaining in the NFC Eastern Division football title game. Washington had the ball and Dallas was down by 13 points. Few people would have been willing to acknowledge that it was even possible for Dallas to win in the waning moments. In the most hair-raising, exciting game in Cowboy history, Roger Staubach completed 24 passes and gained 336 yards, marching his troops to an incredible victory. Roger remained cool and quietly confident so that he could react productively.
3. Bounce Back When You Fail--Regard failure as a learning process in a success-motivated life. Look at it as an experience from which you can attain added knowledge and greater strength. If you have tried to do something and failed, you are vastly better off than if you tried to do nothing and succeeded.
The best hitters in big league baseball have batting averages of between .300 and .400. This means that out of every 10 times they come up to bat, they need to get a hit three or four times. Let's look at it another way. These great players fail to hit safely more often than they actually hit. They frequently step up to the plate and hit out to the infield, fly out or strike out. People won't remember how often you struck out if you hit a home run with the bases loaded in the ninth.
4. Be a Winner--For years I have been asking prospective employees and client applicants if they feel, "It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game." although our parents and others may have given us this advice, I think that it's nonsense. People who are good losers have probably had lots of practice. Leo Durocher, the great baseball manager, said that nice guys finish last. Knute Rockne, a great football coach, exclaimed, "Give me eleven bad losers and I'll give you a championship football team." My friend Duanne Thomas quotes Vince Lombari-- "Winning isn't everything. It's the only thing."
Feel that coming in second is nothing. Give your job your best. Be optimistic. Imagine the personal satisfaction and rewards you will receive by being the best at your job.
5. Stimulate Your Mind--Seek self-improvement through reading, listening to tapes and lectures on success, etc. These, along with attending seminars, will guide you in setting meaningful goals. As motivational writer/speaker Zig Ziglar said, "We never climb higher than the ladder we select.
