THINK SUCCESSFUL, BE SUCCESSFUL

An Attitude Can Change Your Entire Life. And All You Have to do is Change Your Mind.

By Marvin J. Migdol

PART TWO

In this issue, we'll look at more tips for drawing success into your life. Consider these steps for reaching increased growth potential.

1. Be Willing to Pay the Price--In 1977, after stopping smoking and gaining a great deal of weight, I joined "Overeaters Anonymous." I was different (or so I told myself). "I don't have to follow their food plan completely in order to reduce."

So I rewrote the diet plan. I didn't have to live on just four to six ounces of meat a day. I could eat half a pound! Who said I can't eat bread? If I just have a slice or two a day, it won't hurt me. A little extra salad dressing won't amount to many calories. A few more ounces of vegetables, a teensy bit more fruit. It didn't matter much.

Or did it? In 15 months, I lost a mere six pounds. Then I made up my mind to pay the price and lost 26 pounds in a few months. Calories do count.

2. Go the Extra Yard--Success in business or work, like sports contests, is built on narrow margins. In every race we run, we must maintain the slight edge that spells the difference between victory and defeat. It's largely a matter of continuous efforts. In the above example of losing weight, it's amazing what just a few less calories per meal can do to the dial on your scale.

We use only a small fraction of our powers and capabilities. Each individual has a great reservoir of untapped resources. How can you change your life if you increase your mental capacity and effort by on 10 percent?

Despite obstacles like gasoline shortages, put a key in the lock, step on the accelerator and let the power flow through your brain, filling you with greater strength and effectiveness, able to conquer all obstacles and problems which stand between you and success.

3. Make it Happen--I noticed a sign in the beautiful office of Ben Lipshy, chairman of Zale Corporation. It said, "Nothing Will Happen Unless You Make it Happen."

Nobody makes us happy. We make ourselves happy and the same holds true for other emotions we experience. Don't expect anyone else to motivate you. You need to motivate yourself. As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, "Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one's own sunshine."

Fools wait for opportunity, wise men chase it down the street.

George Bernard Shaw put it this way. "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them."

4. Get Organized--An orderly desk and office (or work area) really do help you to be more productive. It helps you to conserve time and effort and keeps you in control. A cluttered disorganized desk leads to chaos. When you lose control of your job, you can't work efficiently.

5. Avoid Irrelevant Activities--Time is your most precious resource. To be successful at work is not just working harder. You must also work smarter. It's the proper management of your time. It's concentrating your efforts on goals and avoiding irrelevant activities. As Thoreau said, "It's not enough to be busy. The question is, What are we busy about?"

Expect more of yourself. Visualize yourself as achieving rather than failing. I believe in your ability to become more successful. You're going to get the results you want and you're going to get them NOW!
