Patent No. 2,230,654 Tetrafluoroethylene Polymers
Roy J. Plunkett was born in New Carlisle, Ohio, on June 26, 1910. After receiving a B.A. degree in chemistry from Manchester College (1932), he went on to receive a Masters and Ph.D. at Ohio State University.
In 1936, he landed a job as research chemist at E.I du Pont de Nemours & Company in Deepwater, New Jersey. Within two years, he had discovered the tetrafluoroethylene resin, "Teflon." Plunkett remained with DuPont in a variety of positions, including chemical supervisor, superintendent of manufacturing, assistant manager, director of the "Freon" Products Section and eventually, Director of Operations for that same section.
Plunkett's discoveries led the new products and processes used in such industries as aerospace, refrigeration, electronic, plastics and aerosol. For his ongoing work, he received the John Scott Medal (1951), the Modern Pioneer Award (1965), the Chemical Pioneering Award (1969), and the Centennial Achievement Award from Ohio State University (1970),
Plunkett retired from DuPont in 1975 and two years later, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by Ohio State University.
