ARE YOU AN ENTREPRENEUR?

Although Many Folks Remain Unclear About This, We Can Break The Term Down and Look at a Few Essentials.
By Mike Foley

Even after years editing a magazine and moving in the world of small business, I still run across folks who don't understand the word "entrepreneur." Even those who are actually working as entrepreneurs may not apply the term to themselves. After all, why give yourself a label when you're unclear about its meaning

With this in mind, it might help to look at the essential qualities that make up an entrepreneur. If these qualities, apply to you, then guess what? You're an entrepreneur.

1. The Knowing--An entrepreneur will often look at other business ventures and think, "I can do better than that." And so there's not only the evaluation of an existing business, but also an underlying confidence that you belong out there in the business world. Entrepreneurs seem to posses this confidence, and it's essential for success.

2. Ideas--Entrepreneurs are never short on ideas. And when those ideas crop up, they begin shaping them in their minds, determining how the idea might ultimately be successful. This is the kind of creative thinking that continues to fuel every new venture the entrepreneur creates.

3. Focus--Not only do entrepreneurs constantly focus and think about particular ideas, they also can't resist talking about them, often running their ideas past trusted friends and relatives. Through this consistent focus, ideas begin to take shape and power, allowing the entrepreneur to envision success...and achieve it.

4. Open Mind--Don't know how to do something? Entrepreneurs don't fret over that. Instead, they take it as a challenge. So they're willing to take the necessary steps to learn. How? By taking workshops, college courses, or using library and Internet research. The more you know, the greater your confidence grows. And that can mean more success for any entrepreneur.

5. Excitement--Many entrepreneurs approach their business with a sense of excitement. In other words, they are not frightened of risk, especially when the risk is handled properly, by gathering information and approaching the risk from a position of strength. That keeps the entrepreneur's excitement high and infectious.

6. Persistence--Do things always work out well for an entrepreneur? Of course not. But unlike others in the general population, entrepreneurs don't get upset. They move on with other ideas and keep their ideas expanding. They aren't dismayed by difficulties--they understand that it takes persistence to ultimately find success. That persistence is a fundamental tool for any successful entrepreneur.

Do the above qualities apply to you, your ideas or your business ventures? If so, then it's safe to say that you're an entrepreneur. And you've got many of the essential tools for success.

So be proud of your ideas and know that you have what it takes to see your ideas blossom. With that in mind, you can move forward and make this world better through your unique products and services.
