Remember summer days spent at the beach or at a park playing baseball? Many of us remember summer as a time to rest, relax, and forget about school work. And although some of us had summer jobs, summer remained a time to break the normal structure of our lives and live a bit differently.
As most of us know, relaxation is important--not only does it recharge us physically, it also allows us to discover new perspectives, to "color outside the lines" and try on new ideas. Nothing could be more important for inventors and all creative people. Dropping structure and preconceived notions allows us to approach problems with fresh eyes, to create new and innovative solutions.
What does this mean for you personally? Simply that you can recapture the restful feeling of summer at any time. Schedule a day off for yourself, away from the job, away from your home workshop. Visit the beach or a park. Talk with people. Talk with other inventors. Sit under a tree and let your mind wander. Don't discount your thoughts. Allow them to come and then play with the ideas, reshape an old approach. Taking time to relax, even one day per month, will give you the fresh perspective that's so necessary to success.
