HERE'S TO FINDING THE DREAM

This month, the Dream Merchant offers a feature on African American inventors. And that got us thinking...

As you read over the accounts of these noted African Americans, stop and think a minute. If we didn't specifically tell you the ethnic background of these inventors, you wouldn't know it. As with most invention stories, you'd simply marvel at the invention, the successful inventor and his/her contributions to our daily lives.

The invention process, you see, knows no color. Ideas don't come more naturally to one group or individual over another. Ideas are everywhere, a testament to human creativity and imagination. Those who make a difference in our lives followed the call of their ideas and held fast to their dreams in the face of adversity.

That sort of perseverance is very human and may even serve as a bridge to understanding in the new century. As humans, are we really that different deep down? Don't we all share similar hopes and dreams and goals? Don't we laugh at humor, marvel at beautiful music, or swell with pride when bringing a new idea to reality? By sharing our dreams and hopes, we may not only find support on our journey, we may even make a friend.

So while the Dream Merchant salutes Black History Month and African American inventors, we haven't given up on our own dream, either--to see ALL inventors become successful--inventors from all areas of the world, of all ethnic backgrounds, from all religions. What a creative world that would be. Let's hope we find it soon.
