A REAL INVESTMENT

As we pick up the pieces and get on with our lives, it's important to know where to focus. Certainly the political and economic realities take a share of our perception and few would argue the need for that. But we at the Dream Merchant suggest an additional focus, one that represents a real investment in our country.

Why not also put energy into our youth? Creativity and innovation begin with our children, with the unspoiled vision they bring to the world. Encouraging that vision and creativity could be the most important thing we do in the next few years. Nothing is sadder than innovation and free-thinking that is stifled in youth. To combat that, the Dream Merchant has included the Kids Kreative Korner in every issue for nearly ten years. Now it's time for our readers, and indeed all U.S. citizens, to join us in teaching the invention process to our kids.

A good start is with the Craftsman/NSTA inventor program featured in this issue. The program allows students in grades 2-8 to compete with tool designs that will make life better in our great country. Don't have children of your own? That doesn't matter. Encourage kids in your neighborhood to enter the contest. Or help a local teacher organize entries from his/her classroom.

A small investment with a child today can reap great benefits tomorrow. Let's keep our country great by encouraging those who will one day inherit it.
