The Editor's Desk... with Mike Foley YOUR HOLIDAY FOCUS The holiday season is one of our favorite times at the Dream Merchant. It's not only a time to focus on friends and family members, it's also an opportunity to look at ourselves, to take stock of our current situation.
I had a friend, owner of a successful marketing business, who claimed he could have never been successful without a holiday season each year. No--not because it's a heavy sales season, but because it offered him a "breather," a chance to look at himself and his business.
"The holidays give you a chance to empty yourself," he used to say. "And then you can begin filling yourself back up in a better way."
With that in mind, we at the Dream Merchant recommend that you do just that. First, empty yourself. Let it all go. Celebrate. Then focus your holiday spirit in three important ways.
* Gratitude--Be grateful for every opportunity that has come your way during the past year, even those that didn't work out for you. A sense of gratitude feeds the spirit and keeps the mind open for still more opportunities.
* Evaluation--Take some time to honestly evaluate your business or product development progress for the past calendar year. If it was successful overall, congratulations. If it wasn't what you hoped it would be, why not? How can you change that in the coming year? This isn't an excuse for beating yourself up. Rather, it's a way to see what needs changing, then making plans to do just that.
* Commitment--Are you fully committed to your goals for 2007? Are you willing to focus a few hours each day to improve your chances at success? If so, that's great. If not, now is the time to make that commitment. Take the power of the holiday spirit and infuse your goals with hope, enthusiasm and positive focus.
Then watch the coming year blossom even beyond your expectations.
Best of luck with your great ideas.
