STARTING AN ENTREPRENEUR CLUB This Sparky Teen Grew Excited About Business and Did Something About it. Now She's Exciting Others, as Well.
By Bonnie Drew
When Angeil Brown makes up her mind to accomplish something, she gets it done. That's just what happened when she was a 16-year-old at Booker T. Washington High School for Engineering Professionals in Houston, Texas.
"I was asked to drive one of my mother's co-workers who had car trouble across Houston to attend a three-day leader training event sponsored by KidsWay." It was too far to drive back home, so Angeil sat quietly in the back of the classroom.
"The more I listened, the more excited I got about what entrepreneurship could do for the teens in my school," she reports. Before long, Angeil was enthusiastically involved in the training with everyone else. When the three-day event ended, she couldn't wait to start a club at her school.
These are the steps Angeil took to accomplish her dream:
Step One--Angeil convinced her English teacher, Mr. Robert Brienzo, to sponsor the Entrepreneur Club.Step Two--She presented a written description of the club and its activities to her principal and got approval.
Step Three--She convinced three friends who had never thought of owning a business to help start the club.
Step Four--They put up flyers in the halls advertising the time and place for the first meeting of the Entrepreneur Club.
Step Five--She used KidsWay training materials to create games and hands-on activities for each meeting.
Each member of the group donated 10 percent of their income back to the club for field trips. That ultimately made the club experience fun for everyone involved.
