THREE STEPS TO EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE

Here's a Guide to Creating Good Relationships With Your Customers.

By Bonnie Drew

Keeping your customers happy should be a top priority when you start your business. Follow these steps and offer the best customer service you can.

1. Get a Written Agreement--Before you accept a job, show the customer your price list and discuss your pay. Then write your agreement out. Describe the work you are going to do, the amount you will be paid, and the date the job is to be completed. Ask for the customer's signature at the bottom. This may seem unnecessary at times, but if you follow this procedure, you will have very few disagreements with customers.

2. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver--When setting dates to complete jobs for customers, always give yourself extra time for unexpected interruptions or delays. If your customer is not expecting his order for a week, you've "under-promised" what you can do. If you deliver it in three days, you've pleasantly surprised the customer by "over-delivering." Customers always appreciate a young entrepreneur who does a better job than expected.

3. Make Your Customers Your Top Priority--After you get the sale, do exactly what you have promised.

* Provide top-quality service in a timely manner.

* Do something extra without being asked.

* Offer a guarantee or warranty on your service.

* Express appreciation when you get paid.

* Keep follow-up appointments faithfully.

Get in the habit of using an appointment calendar to schedule your work, and keep track of deadlines. Remember that your customers are your greatest asset. Being successful in a service business means becoming an expert at serving customers well.
