THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF YOUR BUSINESS

A Few Ways to Let the World Know You're Open.

By Bonnie Drew

After you've organized the business and finished a business plan, it's time to announce that you're officially open. Some business owners do this by having a grand-opening event. Some just start passing out advertisements and telling people about their services.

A grand opening can be a party, an open house, an official ceremony, or just going out for pizza with your friends. The purpose is to launch your business and tell potential customers you are open.

These are some suggestions for ways to officially open your business.

1. Invite all your friends and relatives to a grand opening celebration. Give demonstrations of your product or service and serve refreshments. Hand out lots of flyers and ask everyone to tell others about your business.

2. Get your friends to help you stage an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Make a giant pair of scissors out of cardboard. Have two people stretch a wide ribbon across your front door or business location. Take pictures of friends helping you "cut" the ribbon to officially "open the doors." Be sure to send your story to the local newspapers.

3. Host a come-and-go open house to celebrate your new business. Display your products and give away free samples, business cards, and brochures.

4. Send out a special letter to all your friends, relatives, and neighbors announcing the opening of your business. Include coupons for introductory specials.

5. Have calendars, pens, refrigerator magnets, or other small gifts printed with your business name and information. Go door-to-door in your neighborhood handing out these gifts and announcing the opening of your business. Be sure to take order forms along, just in case you get a new customer right on the spot.

Opening a business is a huge step. Make it a celebration and enjoy it!
