CONSIDER A WINDOW-WASHING BUSINESS

Many People Dislike Washing Windows. That Could Mean Money For You.

By Bonnie Drew

There are lots of people with dirty windows in your neighborhood. They're just waiting for someone like you to save them from having to do the job. Give yourself the title of "window-washing technician."

Here's how to get started:

1. Become an Expert--Practice on your own windows at home until you have developed a good system for cleaning windows.

2. Prepare to Mobilize--Fix up a box or bucket with all your supplies for washing windows. Decide how much you will charge, and start looking for customers.

3. Make Flyers--Pass out flyers advertising your window-washing service to everyone you know. Wait a few days. Then call each person back to ask if she or he is ready to have the windows cleaned.

4. Offer Great Service--Remember the best way to get more business is when your satisfied customers tell their friends and neighbors about your work. Always give each customer first-class service.

You can do twice as many jobs if you have a partner. One of you can work inside and the other outside. Keep a list of your customers, and call them again in six months. Their windows will be dirty again.

BONUS IDEA: Storm Cleanup

If you have frequent storms in your area, call your customers after every bad storm to see if they need window-washing services.

When a hurricane threatens coastal areas, homeowners are always advised to tape their windows. The tape is very difficult to remove once the storm has passed. One enterprising middle school student made a complete business out of removing tape from windows after hurricanes.
