HOW TO USE YOUR TIME WISELY When it Come to Business (And the Rest of Your Life), the Key is Balance.
By Bonnie Drew
Although written goals set the course for the future of your business, achieving those goals depends on a wise use of time and resources.
Successful young entrepreneurs must learn to balance the demands of their business with the demands of school, family, and personal life. To keep your business running smoothly, you have to perform the work you've promised your customers. But you also need time to do your homework, go to band practice, participate in sports, and be with your friends.
And sometimes you just need time to do nothing.
Of course you want to set priorities in your life. But conflicts of priorities waste time. Talk with someone you trust about what comes first in your life. Is it school? Choir? Cheerleading? Personal fitness? Where does your business fit into your list of priorities?
Make a list of all the activities that are important to you. Then number each activity in order of its priority. Make your choices now, and you won't waste time and energy later trying to solve conflicts.
These are the three time management tools most often used by young entrepreneurs:
- 1. A Master "To Do" List--Study the goals you have written for your business, and create a master list of things to do in the next 30 days, 60 days and 90 days. Keep this list in a folder with your goals work-sheets. This is your master plan for achievement.
2. An Appointment Calendar--Buy an inexpensive appointment calendar that is small enough to carry with you everywhere. First write in all your important school deadlines, practice schedules, social commitments, and dates you don't want to forget. Then write in realistic dates to accomplish the important items on your master "to do" list. Use the calendar faithfully to keep track of appointments with customers and deadlines to have jobs completed or orders delivered.
3. Daily Checklists--At the end of every day, look back over your mater "to do" list, and write down the five most important things you need to do tomorrow. Number these items in order of importance. At the beginning of the next day, start on the first thing on the list. Don't worry if you don't accomplish all five things every day. You will always be working on the one that's top priority.
Using the above tools can help you use your time more efficiently. And that can help grow your business.
