TURN NEGATIVES INTO POSITIVES
No Business is Perfect. And You Can Actually Use the "Negatives" to Turn Your Business Around.

By Gary Christensen

It has been said that the three most important things about starting your own business are Location, Location, Location!

On the Internet, this matters little, because anyone in any city can find you within moments after they type in your website address and hit "Enter."

What do you know about the very real Negatives that can affect your business? You turn them into Positives.

• What if the location of your business is "off the beaten track" or outside the city limits? How do you get people to come and visit your business in such a poor location? By turning that Negative into your Key Phrase! One country business out here uses the phrase, "Eggs are cheaper in the country and so are our cars!" They say it's worth the drive.

• What if parking near your store is very limited? People won't come for a visit if they can't find a place to park. You can also turn that Negative into a Positive. One business promises: "Where we pay for the parking!" They have arranged with a local parking lot to bill them for parking costs, for all customers who come to their store.

• What if your night club has very little seating? What do you do? Simple--you announce that it's "standing room only." It will be true and people will come to see why there's SRO. That's turning a Negative into a Positive.

• What if there's poor lighting in your store, bar or restaurant? What do you do--bring in more lights? Why not just advertise, "We have great Atmosphere." Or make it a joke--"We keep the lights low so you can't see how bad your date looks" or something like that. Before you know it, people will be crowding into your place and enjoying the great atmosphere.

• What if you can only be open a few hours each day? Advertise "We're open only during the best parts of each day!" or "Limited Hours but Terrific Service." That's how to turn another Negative into a Positive.

Now let's move on to your website. What's your problem? Did someone do a poor job of designing your site? What do you do--take the designer to court? Or do you advertise it as "The Worst Site on the Web!" Promote it and ask people to tell you what's wrong with it. It might even become a very popular site.

Does your web page load too slowly? Advertise it as "A Page Worth Waiting For" or "A Website Worth the Wait." Another Negative turned into a Positive.

Try to isolate the negative. What makes it a negative? Is there any way to turn that Negative into a Positive? If it's a bad feature, make a joke of it. Make it your key phrase. Get people interested in taking a look BECAUSE of that Negative.

No business needs to be closed just because you discover a Negative. No business is perfect. Not every business can have a great location. Not many businesses always have sufficient parking or the best lighting or enough seating. So try to turn those Negatives into Positives. Turn your business around BECAUSE of that negative!
